I played stumpy lake today for the third time in the 8 years I've lived in Virginia Beach. I only played there today because they allowed carts on 90Β° versus cart path only. The greens were in excellent condition, which hasn't been the case in the past. The course in general was better than I ever remember it. Pace of play was still an issue, but I will be back.

I have played here for 12 years and I have got to say this is the best the course has ever looked. The fairways are green and full of grass. The tea boxes are full of grass and the greens are rolling through this course is drastically changed. Also to mention, they moved their tee times To longer increments so the Pace of play is wonderful

This place is completely unplayable. Besides charging you a regular rate, the starter and staff are short and rush you to the tee box just to sit behind 7 groups. A tee time of 718, resulted in a 5 hour round with no Marshall to be found. To top all of that awesomeness off, there is no grass to be found. Seriously none on the tee box, fairway or green. The greens appear to be under attack from the upside down. I tried this place again because they have been posting on social media that the course is in great shape. It literally should not call itself a golf course, total dog track. Would give it -5 stars if possible.

Look at all the negative reviews besides mine and believe them. This is probably one of the worst-maintained courses I have played. But the difference is that those other courses charge $20 for a round, even on a weekend. There's no excuse for not maintaining the greens. The only positive thing I will say is that the layout and surrounding scenery is fantastic. Our pace of play on the front 9 was smooth, but then we hit a huge logjam on the back. I have no idea why. I think we got lucky on the front and the back is probably apropos for the pace of play based on everyone else's reviews. Bottom line, go elsewhere as there are a lot of options in VA Beach. ***Pic is of the first green*** Not all the greens were this bad, but all of them had a lot of rough patches covering a majority of the putting surface. Oh - they do have the best ball washers I have ever seen. They even had soap in them!! So that's why 2-stars (I had a lot of found balls from previous rounds I cleaned while waiting on the back 9).

I've played this course for over 25 years and it's sad what it has become. Stumpy Lake was never the "pristine" golf course, but it was affordable and in good shape in the early 2000's. Today it just seems completely unkept. A Robert Trent Jones design shouldn't be treated as such. If Stumpy Lake's course conditions looked like Riverfront, I'd easily pay $90+ to play here because the architecture of this course is beautiful, but it really needs an overhaul. Some greens were actually decent, but overall 2.5/5 for me. DRAINAGE IS HORRIBLE! SWAMPY LAKE! NOT EVEN A REAL COURSE AT THIS POINT. I wouldn't even call this a golf course it's basically a mud field with holes at the end.
